About

Having come from a family history of tailors and printers, Peter Superti has always used his hands as the tools of his life long journey of self expression.

In the fall of 1971, at the age of 19 Peter traveled through Europe and spent the year in Florence, Italy absorbing his culture while exploring life’s options. Having returned to the US and working as a carpenter in southern Vermont he attended a summer session at the Penland School of Crafts in Penland, North Carolina in furniture construction/design. The following year he was accepted as an apprentice with British furniture maker David Powell. Under David’s guidance he developed a better understanding of the use of hand tools and the properties of wood in the construction of furniture.

The following year he applied and was accepted to Boston University’s Program in Artisanry, a four year degree program in Wood, Metals, Textile and Ceramics. His studies there were focused on design as relating to personal expression rather than an industrial production sensibility.

After college Peter moved to Hoboken, NJ where he established Trans Hudson Design, a 3 employee woodworking shop catering to the  downtown Manhattan real estate explosion of the late 1980’s. In 1987 Peter started a working relationship as a restorer for Fifty/50, the premier gallery of mid century modern decorative arts. During the following years he worked on the restoration of objects from Carlos Bugatti to Charles Eames. His relationship with Mark McDonald, one of the principle partners continues to this day.

In 1993 Peter moved to Red Hook, NY with his wife and two children, where he downsized from a large woodworking shop to a one man shop. Now working with primarily private clients, he returned to his original concept of one of a kind objects and custom cabinet work. In 2008 he started a contractual agreement with the Donald Judd Foundation as their principal fabricator. Other important clients include Marina Abramovic who over a 13 year relationship has sent Peter to Sao Paulo, Lisbon and Kiev,Ukraine where he oversaw large scale outdoor projects. He also designed and fabricated the table and chairs for her breakthrough show “The Artist is Present” at MOMA in 2010
